Queensland couldn’t capitalise on a sound start after electing to bat, ending the day with 206 and only one wicket in hand, in Alice Springs.Joe Burns, who brought up his second 50-plus score in as many matches, put on 71 for the first wicket along with Charlie Hemphrey, before the latter was trapped in front by legspinner Fawad Ahmed.Fawad picked up the second of his four wickets when he had Peter Forrest, whose solitary run came off 28 balls, lbw in the 38th over. In the seven overs between Hemphrey’s and Forrest’s dismissal, Queensland managed only six runs, the slow scoring-rate a constant feature of their innings.Queensland’s only other substantial partnership came via Burns and Michael Philipson, the latter contributing 39 to their 74-run association. But, from 3 for 167, the visitors lost six wickets for 39 runs, the slide triggered by the departures of Philipson and Burns in the space of four deliveries.
